Micromax Canvas Gold A300 is powered by 2GHz octa core processor and comes loaded with Android 4.4.2 (KitKat) out of the box. This phone is the first gold only phone by Micromax and is available in 2 variants – a gold & black and gold & white.

Here are the main features of this phone:

  • Dual SIM
  • 5.5 inch FHD display
  • 2.0 GHz Octa core processor with 2 GB RAM
  • 32 GB in-built storage with no microSD support
  • 16 MP back and 5 MP front camera
  • Android KitKat 4.4.2 out of the box

Design & Build Quality: Although this phone has a 5.5 inch display it actually feels quite good in hand because it’s just 6.9 mm thick and is quite light. The build quality is very good and metallic body appears to be quite sturdy. However the screen is not scratch resistant and you are advised to use a screen protector.

Display & User Interface: The 5.5 inch LTPS LCD display with 1920 x 1080 px resolution and 401 ppi pixel density is incredibly vivid. The colors appear natural and viewing angles are good. The display is actually very bright and outdoor viewing is extremely good.

Micromax Gold A300 runs on Android KitKat 4.4.2. The user interface is very stock Android as with most Micromax phones. We will have to wait and see whether Micromax does customize this default user interface in their future firmware updates.

Processor & Performance: Micromax A300 Canvas Gold has a Mediatek MT6592T chipset and an octa core 2 GHz CPU. This device also has 2 GB RAM. There is no lag in application and scrolling. Watching Youtube videos and FHD videos on the 5.5 inch display was a pleasure.

Multitasking and playing games were exceptionally smooth. However this device, as with many other octa core devices, does heat up a little while using CPU intensive apps.

Call reception was satisfactory and browsing experience was awesome. Wi-Fi signal was strong with Wi-Fi Hotspot. This device does support USB OTG and an OTG cable is also included in the box pack.

Camera: The 16 MP autofocus camera with Sony EIS Sensor takes decent snaps and does support HDR, panorama and Geo-tagging. Photos taken indoor in low light conditions were good. Capturing FHD videos at 1080p is also supported and were actually quite decent.

The front camera is 5 MP and is very good for taking selfies as well as video calling. This camera also takes very good photos even in low light.

Storage and Memory: Out of the 32 GB ROM about 25 GB is available to the user. Surprisingly only 1 GB is available for apps. No microSD card slot - so no expandable storage. Of the 2 GB RAM about 1.4 GB is free which is good.

Battery: The phone has a Li-Po 2300 mAh non-removable batter that provides for a talk time up to 8 hrs. On medium usage this may last the day but if you are a heavy user consider carrying your travel charger or power bank.

Conclusion: The Micromax Canvas Gold A300 is a decent octa core phone with 32 GB storage. Although this phone has a very impressive display and a good camera, there are a certain points worth mentioning about this phone.

First of all this phone does heat up a little while playing high end games. Secondly, at this price range you should expect a customized user interface not the vanilla Android version. Thirdly, no Gorillas Glass and only 1 GB storage space is available for apps.

If you can live with that then go buy Micromax Canvas Gold A 300 as it is a decent performer with premium looks.

We all want our smartphones to have a fast system so that there is no lag in operation and live up to the demand of current applications and games. So how do we know that our device has the necessary fire power? It is simple. There are certain performance benchmark applications that are good enough to give us a fair idea about our android device.

Antutu Benchmark (Higher is better): This is a popular benchmarking application. It calculates the score after measuring CPU, GPU, RAM, Graphics both 2D and 3D, I/O performance, SD card read-write speed and most importantly the user experience of Android devices. After calculating the score this application will update Antutu database and display the device ranking so that it can be compared with other Android devices.

Quadrant Benchmark (Higher is better): This is basically a Input/Output, CPU and 3D graphics benchmark.

Vellamo Benchmark (Higher is better): This is a set of system level benchmarks. The Browser chapter measures the browser performance, the Multicore chapter calculates the synergy of CPU cores and the Metal chapter evaluates the CPU.

NenaMark2 Benchmark (Higher is better): This is mainly a graphic benchmark that measures performance via natural scenes that could be taken from a usual game and presents the result in frames per second.

The effects that are measured include Skeletal Animation, Morph Target Animation, Bump Mapping, Water reflections, Cloud System, Cube Map Reflections, Smoke, Shadow Mapping,  Texture Channel Animation, Smooth Gradient Animation, Dynamic lighting,  Lens flare.

Linpack Benchmark (Higher is better): By using multi-threading this application tests the multi-core processors. Speeds can be compared for both single and multi-threaded runs. This app helps to measure the performance of the multi-core device under Android.

The Alcatel One Touch Hero features a great design, a large and vivid display. Although the main attraction of this phone is its 6” Full HD IPS with Full OGS Lamination and Oleophobic coating, there are other areas that this phone scores very well.

Apart from a great camera, this dual SIM phone has a Stylus included with which you can take notes, draw pictures and of course move things around more efficiently. You have the option to wirelessly charge this device and even have your display mirrored with the help of Pico Projector.

Design & Display: Alcatel One Touch Hero is just 8.5 mm thin and weighs around 177.6 grams. Since this phone has a large screen it might not be suitable for one handed use. On the right hand there is a SIM slot, the volume buttons and the power button. On the left hand side is the SIM 2 slot for dual SIM versions and microSD slot for single SIM versions.

The large display with thin bezels really looks good. The 6 inches 1080p IPS LCD display with a pixel density of 367ppi is lively and brilliant.  It presents crisp images and sharp texts. The viewing angles of this phone are great and the color simulation is superb.

UI & Performance: The Once Touch Hero runs on a heavily customized version of Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean). The beautifully customized lock screen provides easy access to the dialer, camera and messages. It even supports multiple widgets and you can actually swipe to see details.

There is also the Dual Display that can be activated by long pressing the back key. The Dual Display when activated shows an application drawer on the side of the screen according to your preference. You can drag two apps from the drawer and they will share the screen allowing you to simultaneously use to apps on the same screen. You can even change the size of the screen an app occupies.

The notification area is transparent and you can now control which third party application can display notification. There are also some handy gesture supports like flipping over to silent an incoming call or shaking to skip a song.

The Alcatel One Touch Hero phablet is powered by Mediatek MT6589 chipset, Quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A7 processor, PowerVR SGX544 GPU and 2 GB RAM. Although, due to the limitation of the chipset, performance of high end games may be a bit sluggish. But this phone makes it up in other departments. There is no lag in application or transition and multi-tasking is at ease.

Watching videos and movies on this 6 inch device is a delight. You will enjoy watching movies on this device and will soon forget that this device is actually a phablet. Audio is pretty loud.

Storage: The dual SIM version has 16 GB of internal memory and the single SIM has 8 GB internal memory. The single SIM version also supports 32 GB microSD card.

Camera: The 13 MP autofocus rear camera with LED flash takes beautiful pictures. The clarity and color details are excellent and appear natural. Pictures taken in low light conditions and indoors are also good.

The camera application is simple yet good. You can take HDR snaps and the camera supports touch focus, panorama, face detection, 3D Photo, Burst Mode and geo-tagging. FHD videos at 1080p@30fps can be captured.

The front camera is 2 MP and can be used for video chatting and taking selfies.

Connectivity: One Touch Hero has Bluetooth v 4.0, WLAN, Wifi Direct, Wi-Fi hotspot, DLNA Miracast and HSDPA 42 Mbps.

Battery: The massive 3400 mAh non-removable Li-Ion battery has a stand-by time of 360h (3G) and a talk time up to 18h (3G).

Here are some interesting features of Alcatel One Touch Hero:

  • 6 inch Full HD display
  • Integrated stylus to take notes or draw pictures.
  • Quick sidebar for easy access to popular programs.
  • Dual window display to simultaneously work on two apps.
  • Handwriting recognition.
  • Excellent 13 MP primary camera.
  • Wifi Miracast display.

Alcatel has some cool accessories for this phone:

Wireless Charger for charging wirelessly.

LED Magic Flip Cover to get notification and time with the help of Tiny LED lights.

Small Bluetooth phone to make and receive calls, send SMS and do much more.

Conclusion: The is an extraordinary phone for its price tag. The large display with slim bezels looks very premium indeed. Watch movies, drawing and taking notes using the stylus and even using popular apps like facebook, twitter etc. will be a pleasure with this phone.

XOLO Q1200 is a premium phone that has a 5 inch IPS LCD display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3. This phone runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with a customized user interface and some software enhancements.

Although this phone is probably a wee bit heavy and does not have a removable battery, XOLO has made conscious effort to deliver a quality phone.

Here are the main features of XOLO Q1200:

  • Single SIM (Mircro) with 3G support.
  • 5 inch IPS display with corning gorilla glass 2
  • 1.3 Ghz Quad Core Processor
  • Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean (Updatable to Android Kit Kat)
  • 8 MP autofocus rear camera with 1080p video capture
  • 2 MP front camera
  • 8 GB internal storage with support for 32 GB microSD card
  • 1 GB RAM
  • OTG support, Wi-fi Direct, Blutooth 4.0, Compass
  • Wireless Display
  • Voice Commands and Gesture Control
  • FM Radio
  • 2000 mAh battery
  • Available in White & Black Color.

Build Quality: This build quality of this phone is good and the phone is made of a combination of plastic and aluminum.

Design: The back cover is not removable and is made of aluminum. The combination of plastic with metallic finish gives the phone a premium look. The microSD and micro SIM card tray is located on the right.

The volume rockers and the power button are located on the left. It feels a bit odd especially when you attach the flip cover included in the box pack and try to wake up the phone by pressing the power button.

Display: The 5 inch IPL LCD display with a 1280 x 720 px resolution and 294 ppi pixel density does a good job. Display is sharp, clear with excellent colors and good viewing angles.

The Screen is made of Corning Gorilla Glass 3 which means it will be scratch proof.

User Interface: The user interface is quite different from stock Android as it has been customized. Also included are 6 themes that can change the UI completely.

The phone features double tap to unlock and flip to silent. The touch sensitive buttons don’t light up.

Software: The XOLO Q1200 runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and is guaranteed a KitKat update. The phone supports gesture control such as “Smart Wake” and “Non-touch operation” which when activated uses the proximity sensor to control certain functions.

Voice commands are also accepted. You can answer or reject calls, snap a photo or set an alarm with voice commands. I found the “Non-touch operation” a bit tricky and needs a bit of practice.

Another interesting feature of this phone is floating window panel that allows you watch videos or listen to music on top of other windows or apps. There is also the option to password protect apps that you want to.

Camera: XOLO Q1200 has an 8 MP autofocus primary camera with dual LED flash. The camera supports touch-focus, face detection, panorama, HDR and geo-tagging. Videos can be recorded at 1080p / 30fps.

The camera has a Sony Exmor R sensor and takes quality pictures. Even low light images were pretty good. The quality of videos taken by this 8MP camera is also quite good.

The camera application has lots of cool stuff loaded including 3D mode, smart selfie mode, smart magic mode, ZSD and professional mode. There are also some nice effects included.

The front camera is 2 MP and can be used to video chat.

Storage: This device has an internal storage of 8 GB out of which approximately 6 GB is available to users. 2 GB is allocated for applications and about 4 GB for storage.

Memory card up to 32 GB is also supported.

Performance: Q1200 runs on Mediatek MT6582 chipset and a Quad-core 1.3 GHz processor. The device has 1 GB Ram (out of which about 700 MB is free) and Mali-400MP2 GPU.

Everything seems to work smooth and there were no lag in any application or transition. Games ran smoothly and there were no heating problems.

Call reception and clarity were good and the GPS locking was fast.

Sound: Sound clarity is excellent on this phone. The dual speakers at the back of the phone deliver loud and true sound. There is also the option to enable DTS technology for clear and richer sound.

Battery: The Li-Po 2000 mAh non removable battery gives up to 385 hrs (3G) stand-by time and up to 9 hrs (3G) talk time. On moderate usage it last about 14 hours.

The phone also has a power saver application to help conserve the phone battery.

Conclusion: With Q1200, XOLO seems to be heading in the right direction. This phone is actually very good single SIM phone because it supports voice commands, gesture control and is loaded with features.

Review Of XOLO Q1200 Smart Phone With Gesture Support

By Sudipto →

Design: Although it's a bit larger, the design of Samsung Galaxy S5 is similar to its predecessor Galaxy S4. This is where it was most disappointing. The phone doesn't feel premium at all. The same glossy plastic with silver surround desperately needed a change where Sony and HTC have managed to give an elegant look to their phones.

Build Quality: The build quality is excellent and the phone is durable. Samsung is renowned to make phones that can survive a few "drop" and this one is no exception. In fact one of the phone's USP is its water and dust resistant capacity (check the video below). Samsung claims that the phone can survive being submerged in water up to 1 meter for 30 mins.

Display: With its 5.1 inch FHD 1080p display and a pixel density of 432 ppi, the image clarity is awesome. The viewing angles of this phone are superb. This display is crisp and clean with vibrant colors. Visibility is very good even in direct sunlight while outdoor.

Processor: Samsung Galaxy S5 is powered by MSM8974AC Snapdragon 801 chipset, Quad-core 2.5 GHz Krait 400 processor and Adreno 330 GPU. The phone is an excellent performer and there is no lag while browsing, gaming and multitasking. It actually performs much better than its predecessor Galaxy S4.

Software & UI: The all new TouchWiz user interface along with Androiod 4.4 KitKat is quite refreshing. The most visible changes have been made to the notification area at the top, the navigation bar at the bottom and the application drawer.

The notification icons have now a rounded look and you can now choose the controls that you want to appear in the notification panel. Lock Screen has been overhauled completely. A weather and pedometer gadget has been included. There is also a camera swiper as well.

Camera: The 16MP camera of Galaxy S5 is one of the best in the market today. The pictures taken by the phone are excellent. The quick auto focus feature of this phone is quite handy and the real time HDR mode enabled me to enhance the photos before even shooting them. I also loved the "Selective Focus" feature. The "Make objects stand out from background" was exciting. All in all I was impressed by the quality and simplicity of the camera application and I am sure you will love it too (check the last video).

Finger Print Sensor: The fingerprint sensor is not very easy to use. It requires a smooth and exact swipe and can’t be used casually. Comparatively the iPhone 5S TouchID sensor is much more easy to use.

Heart Rate Sensor: The dedicated heart rate sensor at the back of phone monitors your heart rate with a infrared light when you put your finger over the sensor. However I still don't understand what the usefulness of such a device is.

Battery: The performance of the removable 2800mAh battery was pretty decent. It lasted about a day on medium usage. The include Ultra Power Saving Mode that you can toggle via quick setting menu is a neat utility as well. When selected the display screen turn black and white and only 6 essential apps are shown. The 3 default apps are Phone, Messaging and Internet leaving you to add the remaining 3 according to your requirement.

Performance: The performance of the phone is up to the mark. Although the phone has only 2GB RAM, I didn't see any lag in performance. All normal application as well as gaming performed very well. The excellent display screens as well the powerful processor make this device a great gaming device.

Here is the Hands On Official Review Video:

Conclusion: Despite some disappointment in the design area and looks, the Samsung Galaxy S5 is still a great phone. You will love the user interface and the camera. This device is sturdy, durable and a heavy performer.
